The NIE —Foreigner Identity Number— is the tax and administrative identifier every foreign person needs in Spain for essential procedures: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, authorized part-time work or formalizing university enrollment. You will need it if you stay more than six months, want to open a bank account, sign a lease, undertake authorized paid internships or access scholarships that require tax identification.
EU students should apply at the start of their stay; non-EU students usually process it after entry with a student visa, in coordination with their stay authorization.
The process includes completing form EX-15, paying the relevant fee, gathering passport, proof of entry, university admission or visa, and attending the appointment at the police station or immigration office in your municipality.
